Tourism in Barcelona. What to visit WALKING DOWN THE RAMBLAS A 2-km stroll from Plaça Catalunya to the harbour of Barcelona. It is the preferred place for living statues, acrobats, jugglers and musicians. Each bit of the Ramblas has its own name:
1.Rambla de Canaletes This part of the Rambla gets its name from the Fountain of Canaletes, which is located at the beginning of the avenue. It is also the celebration point of the FC Barcelona victories. The legend has it if you drink its waters, you will come back to the city.
2.Rambla dels Estudis It gets its name from the old city University located on the avenue.
3.Rambla de les Flors It is world-known for the charm of the flower and animal stands -especially birds- that adorn both sides of the boulevard.
4.Rambla dels Caputxins This is the area where the convent of the Capuchin monks was situated.
5.Rambla de Santa Mònica This is the last bit of the boulevard before reaching the Columbus statue and the sea front. Its name comes from the Santa Monica Church.
LA RUTA DEL MODERNISMO 3 examples of the Catalan Modernism for the tourist not to miss:
• Sagrada Familia: This is the most important work by architect Antoni Gaudí, still unfinished, since it was to be an expiatory temple funded with the public charity donations and therefore the lack of funds kept on periodically stopping the works. Gaudí began building the cathedral on the 3rd of November 1883 and it was projected as a work dedicated to God's glory: Its three façades are dedicated to the Birth, Passion and Death of Jesus Christ. The 12 towers symbolize the 12 apostles.
• Casa Batlló: One of the most outstanding aspects of the house is its mosaic façade in splendid colours. The inside is very imaginative with varied decorative elements: furniture, stained-glass windows and wrought iron elements.
• Casa Milá or "Pedrera": last Gaudi's residential building and one of the most creative ones. This is more an sculpture, rather than an actual building. Its façade is a very impressive, varied and harmonious ondulating mass of stone, without straight lines, in which the wrought iron pieces in the balconies seem to imitate plant forms.
